Frost MusicReach

Frost MusicReach is the Community Education and Engagement Program within the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. The Program is coordinated by Dr. Cassandra Eisenreich who earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in flute performance with an emphasis on music education at the Frost School of Music.

Cassandra is a dedicated and accomplished performer and educator who has performed at the highest level and inspired students at all levels across the US and beyond. She has an advisory and supporting role as Music Education Specialist with Nuvo.

Mission

To promote the healthy growth and development of individuals through the study, practice and performance of music. We strive to build healthier communities by investing in the positive development of individuals through music. We strongly believe in developing individuals as musical ambassadors of peace, hope and understanding amongst people of diverse cultures, backgrounds, and beliefs.

Frost School of Music students serve as mentors, teachers, and role models in our Frost MusicReach programs and projects. These experiences provide Frost students with the chance to develop and enhance their music teaching and performance skills in authentic situations. These experiences help to better prepare Frost students for a future as successful, aware and socially responsible members of the professional music community.

The Frost MusicReach program values the importance of a multi-tier mentoring model. Frost undergraduate students are paired with graduate students to teach classes within each program. These experiences allow graduate students to serve as lead teachers while also guiding and mentoring undergraduate students in their teaching. Additional graduate students from the Frost School serve as supervisors overseeing each program. These experienced graduate students help with curriculum development, implementation and teacher guidance.

Frost MusicReach Program at Frederick Douglass Elementary

In our Frost MusicReach programs, we strive to cultivate an environment where students can be themselves, learn, grow, and embrace the life lessons that come along with studying music. Nuvo has provided Frost MusicReach with an opportunity to reach more students by creating high quality instruments at an affordable price.

After trying Nuvo instruments for the first time, we were impressed with the initial experience and became interested in researching the instruments in greater detail. Once the research began, we immediately wanted to get involved and find a way to reach more children with these instruments.

Frost MusicReach has implemented the Nuvo jFlute and Clarinéo in our Frederick Douglass Elementary School program where our afterschool group lessons run twice a week for 30 minutes.

Many music programs use recorders as introductory instruments. The recorder is great to help students learn the basics of music, however, the air needed to play the recorder is not in any way representative of the air needed to play wind instruments in general. It is clear that Nuvo instruments are bridging this gap and allowing students to begin playing these instruments comfortably at a young age.

Due to the innovative work of Nuvo, we are able to begin our students as young as age 6. The jFlute and Clarinéo are the perfect weight and overall size for young children and the color selections add a fun personalized option. The headjoint of the jFlute and the mouthpiece of the Clarinéo easily detach for initial embouchure work in the beginning stages of learning. The jFlute’s curved headjoint and key extenders allow for an accommodating and comfortable hand position. The Clarinéo reed options allow for students to build up embouchure endurance by beginning with a synthetic reed and working toward the harder bamboo option. Some educators have an initial concern with the Clarinéo being pitched in C instead of Bb. If the Clarinéo was similar to the trombone, where pitch is directly related to the ability to hear and find an abstract placement along the instrument, we would certainly be slightly more concerned. For our purposes, in our quest to give children the opportunity to learn and experience music in all its glory, the pitch of the Clarinéo is a minor detail that has yet to create any conflict in our
small group classes. The transition from Nuvo instruments to their full size equivalents has been seamless, without any major issues with maintenance or repairs. Our students are grateful to have instruments to call their own and we are happy to provide them with Nuvo instruments (see them in action)!

Nuvo Instruments in Action at South Island School, Hong Kong

Nuvo Instruments in Action at South Island School, Hong Kong

The South Island School in Hong Kong has adopted an innovative and inspiring approach to music education for Grade 7’s.

Head of Music Debra Jones is an accomplished woodwind musician and feels that all children in her classes should at least have the opportunity to try an orchestral instrument. She devised the idea that it would be good to take an instrument such as the Clarinet or Flute and teach the whole class the rudiments of tone production, posture, fingering and rhythm with the ultimate goal of playing simple tunes as an ensemble. She also hopes to inspire the children to take up the instruments more seriously with extra-curricular lessons.

With 30 children in the class it was an interesting challenge to find suitable instruments that would be practical and not eat up too much of her precious budget. Then she discovered Nuvo.

First she adopted the Nuvo Clarinéo which is a lightweight, durable and inexpensive clarinet in the key of C. She purchased 30 instruments and with the help of a colleague created a tray which neatly holds 30 Clarinéos so they are ready when the children come to class. The mouthpieces and plastic reeds are kept in buckets so that they can be easily sterilized between classes.

The Clarinéo’s require no assembly so within minutes of arrival the children are ready with their instruments. If a Clarinéo accidentally gets dropped or knocked over, it’s no problem as the instruments are extremely durable. The children all learn woodwind techniques with a reed as well as fingering and sight reading. The process of playing together as an ensemble inspires the children and with this good foundation in woodwind many of them will go on to take up the clarinet, saxophone or other woodwind.

In June of this year Debra became aware of the Nuvo flute and decided to set up a similar class concept with the flute. She now has 60 instruments in total all of which are used up to 3 times a day. The flute bodies are kept assembled and stored in a box while the head joints are kept separately so they can be cleaned with sterilized wipes and rinsed with water in between classes. From time to time the whole instrument is washed with warm soapy water to keep them hygienic. The coloured key caps have been positioned so as to help with class instruction: They guide the children’s fingers to the correct keys. In the early days it was useful for Debra to be able to say to the class, “Now press the blue key…that’s a B.“

At the end of the class the children return the instruments to the box and the head joints are quickly sterilized, ready for the next class.

This practical use of Nuvo instruments is exactly what they were designed for. We thank Debra for her vision and ideas and we look forward to seeing some inspired musicians graduating from the South Island School in years to come.

Children as Young as Three Taking Up The Clarineo!

Children as Young as Three Taking Up The Clarineo!

Hong Kong woodwind musician and teacher, Terry Chan from V-Music shows that you can start children off on the Clarinéo at the tender age of 3!

With over 15 years of experience teaching brass and woodwind, Terry has a simple strategy for giving his students the best chance of being captivated by the joy of making music. He’s says quite simply that the younger they start the faster they learn and the less distracted they get. With this approach he has 12 students under the age of 8 all learning the Clarinéo with a number of them taking ABRSM Grade exams.

“Before I discovered the Clarinéo, it wasn’t really possible to introduce the Clarinet to children under the age of 8 and even many 8 year olds struggle with the weight, size and complexity of a Bb Clarinet. Now I use the Clarinéo for the first couple of years which gives a perfect foundation for a child who might later go on to play the clarinet, saxophone or any other woodwind”. Terry’s enthusiasm for the Clarinéo is shared by his students and their parents. “Most parents are reluctant to invest in an expensive instrument at the outset because they are unsure if their child will stick with it. The low initial cost and low maintenance cost of the Clarinéo gives them the perfect introduction without breaking the bank, meanwhile the child appreciates the lightweight, smaller size and they can produce a good tone right from the start.”

Since starting up teaching with the Clarinéo a couple of years ago Terry has increased his studio business and also had the opportunity to introduce the Clarinéo to a number of local schools. Now with the advent of the Nuvo Flute Terry can even offer basic woodwind introduction classes at Kindergartens!
